Safety depends on the app’s design and how you use it. Check file encryption, key handling, previews, backups, and what happens if you forget the secret. A locked interface alone does not answer those questions.
Ask what protects the actual files
A PIN screen controls entry to an app. It does not tell you whether stored images, thumbnails, or filenames are encrypted. Look for an explanation of file protection and key handling rather than relying on a lock icon or an absolute promise.
Octoshield uses AES-256-GCM authenticated encryption in chunks. It derives per-item keys from a random master key and encrypts the index and thumbnails. This describes the implementation, not an independent audit or a guarantee against every attack.
Understand the recovery tradeoff
Ask whether access can be reset, whether keys are uploaded, and how device transfer works. Recovery convenience and strict device-local storage produce different answers. Neither a recovery button nor its absence is enough to judge the whole design.
Octoshield combines your secret with a device-bound Keychain key. Optional biometrics use a separate protected key slot. There is no recovery service, cloud vault backup, or automatic device transfer. Losing your secret and access paths can mean losing your files.
Check copies and your device
Encryption at rest does not stop someone looking over your shoulder while the vault is open. It does not control exports, screenshots, or originals left in Photos. Octoshield obscures content in the app switcher and during detected capture, but iOS screenshots cannot be universally blocked.
Keep iOS updated, use a strong device passcode, and lock the vault after use. Preserve essential documents using an independent backup arrangement. Read the security model before importing the only copy of anything important.
A few related questions
01Can Octoshield recover a forgotten secret?+
No. The current app has no recovery service or recovery phrase.
02Are exported pictures still protected?+
The vault protects its stored copies. Exported or shared copies are controlled by their destinations.
iOS menus can vary by version. Octoshield instructions describe the current local app implementation. Check the App Store listing for the version available to download.
